I would argue that if your only reason for doing good, decent things is to go to heaven, you don't deserve to be there. Also, no one says you have to post a video, go donate $5 anonymously and call it a day. If the only reason you do good is for a personal reward, well, that's whats wrong with the world today. I'd rather go to hell for doing what's right for other people, than heaven for doing nothing.

So I would ask, doing charity where others can see you, doesn't that fall in this category? Giving alms at service or dropping a coin in the Salvation Army bucket, doesn't that count as trumpeting it out? Or is there a limit on the number of people that see you that suddenly makes it acceptable? Maybe it's that they are 'saved' too?Yelling Quietlyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04585189907650945947noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2932989044385275551.post-50155098739287000002014-08-22T16:20:22.352-05:002014-08-22T16:20:22.352-05:00I too share a natural pushback on whatever is cool...I too share a natural pushback on whatever is cool on social media. But As of today, the ALS Association has received $53.3 million while last year it brought in $2.2 million during the same period. Regardless of the vanity of posting pictures of oneself being "charitable," money and attention is being raised for a good cause, a cause that intends to relieve suffering, and for me that good (relieving suffering) far outweighs the bad (vanity, narcissism). If it's raising that kind of money, it's no longer "pop philanthropy." Thanks Father
Biffnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2932989044385275551.post-77305231746937560232014-08-22T15:04:49.852-05:002014-08-22T15:04:49.852-05:00Amen! (I haven't been challenged so haven't had to express it).

I fear the viral-donation-trend to come. A friend who works for a charitable organization in South Bend remarked on how brilliant this was, and how she'd love to come up with such a hugely successful campaign.
