Right after Sunday Mass on the July 5th I hit the road, and have been helping at my dad's house the last week, so I'm quite late getting my 250th Anniversary of Independence Day homily posted. In telling the story of Catholics in America, in this recording of the homily I left out an advertisement I shared with others. Bishop Louis William DuBourg posted this advertisement for French missionaries to come join them in the Louisiana Territory:
We offer you: No Salary; No Recompense; No Holidays; No Pension. But: Much Hard Work; a Poor Dwelling; Few Consolations; Many Disappointments; Frequent Sickness; a Violent or Lonely Death; an Unknown Grave.
And yet they came.
